For a long time, the financial world felt like a private club. It seemed like there was a velvet rope keeping out anyone who didn’t have at least $5,000 or $10,000 ready to hand over.
When I retired from federal service with just my pension and Social Security, I certainly didn't have thousands of extra dollars lying around to throw into the stock market. If you’ve avoided investing because you thought, "I don't have enough money to start," I have wonderful news for you: The rules have changed.
The "Window Box" Method
In our Window Box philosophy, we know that you don't need a whole acre of land to grow food. You just need a little pot and some soil. Today, technology allows you to do the exact same thing with your money.
There is a new wave of tools designed specifically for people who want to start small. Really small.
In the past, to buy a share of a big, stable company, you might have needed $200, $500, or even $1,000 for a single share. That is out of reach for many of us on a fixed income!
Thanks to something called Fractional Shares, you can now buy a "slice" of a share for as little as $1 or $5.
Think of it like a pie. You might not be able to afford the whole bakery pie today, but you can certainly afford one delicious slice. And that slice is just as real as the rest of the pie. If the pie grows, your slice grows too.
The Power of $10 a Week
Let’s look at your daily routine. If you can skip one impulse purchase a week—maybe a magazine, a lottery ticket, or a drive-thru lunch—and invest that $10 instead, three amazing things happen:
You build a habit.
You prove to yourself that you are an investor.
You create a safety net that grows over time.
It is not about getting rich overnight. It is about planting a seed today so you have shade—and fruit—tomorrow.
This Week’s "Seed of Wisdom"
Fractional Shares: A method of investing where you buy a portion of a stock rather than the whole thing. If a stock costs $100, but you only have $10, you can buy 10% of that stock. You still own it, and if the company pays dividends (profit sharing), you get your fair share of that profit, too!
Your Small Step for This Week
Take a look at your budget over the next few days. Can you find $5 or $10 a week that usually "disappears" without you noticing? Find that small leak, and get ready to patch it by planting it in your window box instead.
To your steady growth,
Dan Founder, Window Box Financial
